THIS YEAR’S PRESENTER: SANDY RAE SCOTT
ASL Immersion Weekend 2013
April 12th, 13th, and 14th
Sandy Rae Scott is originally from North Carolina, but has lived in several states during her adult years. Last year, she recently relocated to Staunton, VA for a teaching position at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (VSDB).
Sandy was one of four pioneers who received a Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Studies from Gallaudet University in 1997. After receiving her BA degree, Sandy moved to Seattle and taught ASL at a public high school for four years. She has also worked as an ASL instructor at Gallaudet University and Seattle Central Community College. After teaching to a hearing audience, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Deaf Education in Bilingual Settings at McDaniel College. During her graduate years, she provided ASL and Deaf Culture workshops at McDaniel College and in various school settings.
Sandy has taught Deaf children for ten years in Deaf residential schools. At VSDB, she enjoys teaching ASL to elementary and middle school students. Sandy knows that through ASL education she gives all students a sense of ownership of their natural language – ASL. Sandy has been an advocate for deaf youth and often inspires young deaf people to pursue higher education. She also works as an ASL Drill instructor at the University of Virginia. She has provided several workshops for interpreters, Deaf Education educators, and ASL signers. Her workshops focus on ASL drills for the development of receptive and expressive skills.
In her free time Sandy enjoys traveling, entertaining her friends, watching movies, and spending time with her two cats.
