2017 ASL Immersion Weekend Presents

“TRUE-BIZ ASL!”

The 2017 ASL Immersion Weekend theme is TRUE-BIZ ASL! with not one but TWO experienced ASL instructors and CDIs for the first time in twenty-two years!  Over the weekend, various topics will be presented, all with the ultimate goal to (gently) push attendees out of their comfort zone and elevate their ASL skills.  Topics that will be covered are as follows:

  • Visual Gestural Communication
  • English to Images to ASL
  • ASL Expansion Techniques
  • Translating English Idioms into ASL
  • Becoming an Advanced Classifier User
  • Academic ASL

When it comes to building skills, the use of scaffolding is an important approach to build a skill set upon another skill set.  Attendees will be split into groups based on their ASL skill level to optimize their learning experience.  For the first part of the weekend, the presenters will break down the ASL language to the most basic skills necessary such as visual gestural communication and build additional skills upon that.  Continuing from visual gestural communication, attendees will retrain their brain to “think in pictures” when translating from English to ASL, utilizing ASL expansion techniques taught.  From there, attendees will practice more complex translation skills such as translating English idioms into ASL.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn how to advance their use of classifiers and will work together to practice using classifiers.  Finally, the scaffolding process will be complete with attendees understanding what Academic ASL looks like and utilizing the techniques learned for the final activity of giving a mini-presentation.
